As captain of the St. Marys Lincolns, Luca Spagnolo stands out not only as a dynamic goal-scorer but also as a respected leader both on and off the ice. “It’s an honour to be a captain for an organization I love so much,” he says.
“I like to think I’m a leader on and off the ice. Before games, I make sure the team is focused and prepared.” Known for his strong two-way play, Spagnolo describes his on-ice style as complete and balanced, always willing to support his team defensively while contributing offensively. “I’m not afraid to be vocal,” he shares. “I’ve always seen myself as a skilled forward, but as I’ve matured, I’ve learned to let the game come to me and play with patience.”
This approach has helped him become an effective playmaker with a keen awareness of his teammates, especially Jaden Lee, a lifelong friend and linemate with whom he shares an undeniable chemistry. “Playing with Jaden is special. He’s one of the best hockey players I’ve ever played with, and he can do things on the ice I’ve never seen before,” Spagnolo says.
“Winning the Western Conference last year was an incredible experience, especially because of our fans … I remember Game 7 in London; we could hear our fans in our little section louder than everyone else.”
Spagnolo’s leadership is also influenced by the Lincolns’ head coach, Jeff Bradley, whose work ethic and dedication inspire the team. “Coach Bradley advocates for being early and fully buying into his system. Nobody works harder than him at breaking down video,” Spagnolo says. “We wouldn’t be nearly as successful without him, and we’re all grateful for what he brings to the team.”
The support of the St. Marys community is another aspect that makes playing for the Lincolns so meaningful to Spagnolo. “Winning the Western Conference last year was an incredible experience, especially because of our fans,” he recalls. “I remember Game 7 in London; we could hear our fans in our little section louder than everyone else.” The dedication of the Lincoln fans, who show up in numbers every game, is something Spagnolo doesn’t take for granted.
Preparation and focus are key elements of Spagnolo’s game-day routine. Before games, he listens to his own music to get into the right mindset and spends time visualizing plays on the ice. It’s this attention to detail and mental preparation that helps him stay grounded, especially during high-pressure games.
Off the ice, Spagnolo is pursuing studies in business management and legal studies, with aspirations of a career in law. He sees the competitive nature of the field as a natural fit, drawing parallels between his drive on the ice and his ambitions for the future. “I think it’s a great career path for me. I’ve always been competitive, and the law requires that same edge,” he explains, mentioning a cousin who took a similar path as inspiration.
Reflecting on his journey, Spagnolo advises younger players to stay focused and put in the work without complaining. “Pay attention to your coaches – they know what they’re talking about. I’ve been lucky to have great leaders to look up to,” he says. For him, a strong work ethic and a positive attitude are essential qualities for anyone hoping to succeed in hockey.
In his role as captain, Spagnolo strives to create a positive team culture, encouraging camaraderie and maintaining an upbeat atmosphere. When conflicts arise, he addresses them directly, understanding that unity is essential to success. “I believe in setting a positive tone, especially during tough stretches. It’s a long season, and keeping everyone on the same page is crucial,” he notes.
Spagnolo’s journey with the Lincolns is driven by his love for the game and the people around him. Whether he’s scoring goals, mentoring younger players, or simply being a steady presence in the locker room, Luca Spagnolo looks to lead the Lincolns to a Sutherland Cup.
